Design, Development, Prototyping and Concurrent Engineering: ELCAN conducts sophisticated R&D for new programs and to support on-going production. For all programs, a pool of highly experienced technical specialists is available for the purposes of ensuring that a high quality product is developed within budget and schedule constraints.

Optical Design Capabilities: Optical design is performed using state-of-the-art computational hardware in conjunction with the latest simulator software, specifically CODE V, GENI, FILM STAR, ASAP and proprietary software packages developed within ELCAN. The optical design group encompasses the areas of detailed lens design, optical thin film definition and the assembly and alignment of prototypes and optical testing. There is a direct liaison between the designers and the test engineers to ensure that the necessary adjustment and alignment features are designed into a product.

Mechanical Design Capabilities: Our mechanical design department works closely with the optical and electronic design groups to ensure that the design of each product meets the physical, operational and performance specifications. Production Engineering and Quality Assurance representatives are involved in the design process from the initial concept through to the final manufacturing drawings. The design staff is experienced in numerous products, including high precision lens assemblies, sighting systems, displays, night vision equipment, scanning systems, fire control systems and digital imaging techniques.

The majority of conceptual design and all detailed design are performed using Inventor software. Design tasks requiring additional stress, vibration, thermal or deflection analysis are performed with ALGOR Finite Element Analysis software.

Electronic Design Capabilities: ELCAN has resources to design and test analog and digital hardware and software. Projects such as high performance servo loops for military optical data storage systems, laser scanning systems and digital projection systems have been developed.

Production Engineering: The Production Engineering Department consists of engineers, draftsmen, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programmers and planners. Process engineers use the same CAD system as our design engineers.

An extensive engineering analysis is performed on all major projects. The results of the Production Engineering analysis identifies candidates for cost reduction through material changes, facility improvements, manufacturing technology development, design of special purpose tooling equipment and the redesign of existing production hardware. In addition, component analyses are carried out to ensure that components perform their function. Tooling and test equipment design is based on the tooling required, and a master tooling list is produced. The master-tooling list defines the complete production tooling and testing requirements and can be traceable to the component level.

Design for Manufacturability: By including ELCAN early, as part of your Integrated Product Team, the design and prototype phase of your project will benefit from years of production experience. ELCAN's experience in all aspects of optical fabrication provides you design for manufacturing from the beginning. This approach can shorten program cycle time and product more cost effective and reliable products in record time. < More

Cutting-Edge Technology: ELCAN Optical Technologies is on the leading edge of tomorrow's technology with a foundation built on a history reaching back to the very beginnings of modern optics. < More

Optical Fabrication: Optical fabrication lies at the very heart of our operation and plays a vital role in maintaining our position as a world leader in the field of optics. Every operation, from grinding, polishing and coating through to testing, utilizes the most advanced technologies and processes. Training of our opticians is performed through a four-year intensive apprenticeship program.

The Optical Department is capable of handling optics, both spherical and plano, from 1mm diameter to over 12 inches in diameter, in a wide diversity of materials. This includes approximately 150 types of optical glass and, in addition, grind and polish IR materials such as germanium AMTIR, zinc sulfide, zinc selenide and silicon. Typical components include spherical lenses, prism, reticles, windows and beam splitters. < More

Thin Film Processing: ELCAN has pioneered many of its performance improvements in modern optics based on advances in thin film coating techniques. ELCAN has been a world leader for almost 60 years in thin film coating design and manufacture with anti-reflection, high reflection and hard-carbon protective coatings for eye and sensor protection, beam splitting, electrical conductivity and other performance enhancements. < More

Diamond Point Turning (DPT): Our diamond-turning facility is the largest in the world. Staffed with highly trained technicians operating state-of-the-art computer numerical control (CNC) machines, our extensive diamond-turning facilities provide for complete control throughout each of the stages of production. < More

VQ/MRF: ELCAN has developed a proprietary NEW method of smoothing DPT Aluminum 6061 mirror surfaces to Visible Quality of 30 Å and beyond! < More

Electronics Manufacturing: ELCAN Málaga provides globally competitive electronic manufacturing services supported by other value-added services such as electronic design, component procurement, final product assembly and test.

Our engineers and technicians are dedicated to quality control. Statistical process control (SPC) and other computer-based systems are used to ensure constant improvement in the quality of work. In-plant testing facilities enable us to deliver products that meet all published performance and material specifications.

This huge array of capabilities allows the usage of different technologies in the same product. ELCAN's microelectronics facility provides high quality electronic assemblies that can be seamlessly integrated with optical subsystems, for a complete customer solution. Vertical capability in optical, mechanical and electronic systems makes ELCAN a highly efficient and streamlined “one-stop” global supplier for even the most complex mixed technology requirements.

Electro/Optical/Mechanical Assemblies: The Optical Assembly Group staff is highly trained in lens mounting centration and optical alignment. Proprietary centering equipment is used to guarantee accuracy on each individual lens element when it is mounted into its cell.

The Instrument Assembly Group assembles product in laminar flow benches to a Class 25 standard, and has a staff of technicians certified to solder, instruct and inspect to the military soldering specification MIL-S-45743. The capabilities of this group also include optoelectronic and optomechanical assembly, precision lens assembly and the ability to perform fine mechanical alignment and assembly for complex instruments. The facilities, which provide these capabilities, include a variety of electronic autocollimators and focusing telescopes, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) test benches and interferometers with computerized data storage and analysis. For high volume production, automated alignment and test benches are established. These become dedicated for specific projects and are capable of fully computerized operation.

Component Subassembly Methods: Personnel within the Instrument Assembly and Optical Assembly areas are experienced with the team unit approach to assembly and alignment, and have worked with optoelectronic assemblies for military and commercial products.

Most processes are done in a batch environment to better control the adhesive processes. Detailed records are kept on all critical in-process steps. Experience has shown that control over adhesive and stress screening of components before final assembly ensures that the highest quality standards are maintained.

Surface Treatment: Whereas many of our competitors subcontract surface treatment, we have the capacity of performing these processes in-house which enables us to ensure that strict process procedures are followed, thereby maintaining control over quality and delivery. Our surface treatment finishes include anodizing, hard anodizing, black oxide treatment, passivation, chrome plating, electro-less nickel plating, painting and metal impregnation.

Test Facilities and Alignment Capabilities:

  • Computerized Modular Transfer Function (MTF) test benches
  • Interferometers and automated test benches for final system test Environmental (thermal, humidity, shock and vibration) test facilities
